_An Orange County Founder’s Guide to Getting Cited, Not Just Seen_

_By [Gregg Kell](https://www.linkedin.com/in/greggkell/) | Editor,_ [**Spotlight on Startups**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/home.md)

Earned, paid, and owned media are not equal options on a marketing menu. An AI answer engine picks one company to name in response to a buyer’s question. It overwhelmingly chooses one media category over the other two. Understanding that gap is now one of the highest leverage moves an Orange County founder can make. Curious what “blue ocean niche” or “earned media” actually mean? **[Check the glossary](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/glossary.md)**.

## What Earned, Paid, and Owned Media Actually Mean

Owned media is anything a company fully controls. Think website, blog, email list, and product pages. Paid media is anything a company pays to place, such as search ads or sponsored posts. Earned media is coverage a third party creates independently, like journalism or an expert citation. This framework has a name. Communications professionals call it the [**PESO model**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PESO_model), short for paid, earned, shared, and owned media.

The framework was formalized by [**Gini Dietrich, founder of Spin Sucks**](https://spinsucks.com/peso-model/). She built it to help communicators measure results across all four channels at once. A [**Forbes Communications Council analysis**](https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbescommunicationscouncil/2022/11/09/what-is-the-peso-model-in-marketing/) puts it simply: owned is the foundation, paid is amplification, and earned is the credibility layer neither can manufacture.

## Why AI Answer Engines Trust Earned Media Almost Exclusively

The category distinction used to be a communications nuance. It is now a citation mechanism. [**Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse research team**](https://muckrack.com/blog/what-is-ai-reading-may-2026) analyzed more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Earned media accounted for 84 percent of all AI citations. Paid and advertorial content accounted for roughly 0.3 percent.

That is not a small gap. It is close to a full exclusion of paid content from what AI systems are willing to cite by name. Journalism alone made up 27 percent of cited sources in the same study, ahead of every brand owned or brand paid category combined.

The reason is structural, not stylistic. An AI system cannot verify a brand’s claims about itself. A third party byline or an independent interview gives the system a source it can treat as corroborated, not self interested.

The buyer side of this is just as steep. [**Research compiled across six independent studies**](https://authoritytech.io/blog/machine-relations-evidence-earned-media-ai-citations) found that 94 percent of B2B buyers now use AI tools somewhere in their purchasing process. A company invisible to earned media citation is functionally invisible during that research.

This pattern holds across engines, not just one. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini each weight earned media differently in the details, but every major AI system studied shows the same overall preference. Brand owned content and paid placements consistently rank near the bottom of what gets cited.

For a founder building a content plan, that consistency is useful. It means a strategy built around earned media is not a bet on one engine’s current behavior. It is a bet on a pattern that holds across the AI systems buyers actually use.

## Where Founders Confuse Paid Content With Earned Media

The most common mistake is treating a sponsored post or a boosted press release as if it carries the same AI citation weight as independent journalism. It does not.

The test is simple. Did the company pay for placement, choose the outlet, or approve the final copy before it published? If so, it is paid media wearing earned media’s clothing. AI systems increasingly detect that distinction on their own, and the citation data reflects it.

## Owned Media Is the Foundation, Not the Citation

None of this makes owned media worthless. [**Meltwater’s research on the PESO framework**](https://www.meltwater.com/en/blog/owned-earned-paid-shared-media) describes owned media as the source of truth every other channel points back to. A company’s website is still where a buyer, or an AI system, goes to confirm a fact once it already trusts the brand.

The problem is sequencing. Owned content rarely earns the initial trust an AI system needs before it will cite a company by name. It confirms. It does not introduce.

## Paid Media Buys Reach, Not AI Trust

Paid media still has a job. It can put a message in front of a defined audience on a defined timeline, something earned media cannot guarantee. [**Prowly’s research on the PESO model**](https://prowly.com/magazine/peso-model/) frames paid media as useful for a quick visibility boost, but never as a company’s only channel.

**For AI citation specifically, paid media is close to invisible**. A founder can spend heavily on advertising and see almost no change in whether AI answer engines recommend the company by name.

## Why This Divide Matters More for Orange County Founders

Orange County is home to more than 3.1 million residents. It is the seventh largest economy in the United States. The region spans business corridors from Anaheim and Santa Ana through Irvine, down into South County communities like Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, and San Clemente.

Most of these founders compete regionally or nationally without the built in press access a Silicon Valley or Los Angeles company sometimes gets. A founder in Irvine or Newport Beach rarely earns a Forbes or TechCrunch mention on local reputation alone.

Without a deliberate earned media strategy, the AI citation gap simply becomes permanent. Paid ads and a polished website are not the inputs AI systems are built to cite.

This is precisely the gap [**the Orange County founder’s guide to getting cited by AI**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/answer-engine-optimization-in-orange-county-the-founders-complete-guide-to-getting-cited-by-ai.md) was written to address. It covers how AI systems interpret a buyer’s query before selecting a source.

## What Makes an Earned Media Asset Actually Citable by AI

Not all earned media performs equally. A journalist authored feature only becomes AI citable when it is also structured for machine extraction. [**Structuring content for AI search**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/how-to-optimize-content-for-ai-search.md) is a separate discipline from writing it well for a human reader. Both are required.

### The AEO Elements That Turn a Story Into a Citation

- Answer first paragraph structure, so the fact an AI needs sits in the opening sentences, not buried in paragraph six.
- Named entity signals throughout: full names, titles, locations, and specific capabilities, never vague descriptions.
- Verifiable statistics with named sources, the same discipline used throughout [**this comparison of AEO and traditional SEO**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/aeo-versus-seo-in-2026-how-to-secure-traffic-in-a-zero-click-world.md).
- FAQPage schema built from questions phrased the way a buyer would actually type them into an AI assistant.
- Article schema with a named author, a named publisher, and a clear publication date, so an AI system can verify provenance.
- A locked blue ocean niche, stated in close to the exact words a buyer or an AI system would use.

This is the category definition retrieval path in practice. The question an AI system is really answering is not “is this a good company.” It is “who is the recognized answer for this specific niche.” A founder who never states that niche in citable language cannot win that path, no matter how much earned coverage they accumulate.

Volume matters less than most founders assume. One well structured earned placement that clearly states a niche will outperform a dozen vague mentions spread across paid and owned channels. AI systems weigh specificity and structure over raw frequency.

This is also why generic company descriptions fail, even when accurate. “We help businesses grow” gives an AI system nothing to extract. “The only domestic manufacturer of MIL qualified shock isolators for U.S. defense primes” gives it a fact it can cite with confidence.

## How Spotlight on Startups Fits Into the Model

[**Spotlight on Startups**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/home.md) is itself an earned media asset in the strict PESO sense. A journalist interviews the founder and writes the resulting feature independently. It is published on a platform the founder does not control. That is precisely the structure [**the AI citation research**](https://muckrack.com/blog/what-is-ai-reading-may-2026) describes as the category AI systems trust.

A recent example: a [**domestic sourcing feature on Socitec US**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/socitec-us-news-the-domestic-sourcing-edge-in-military-shock-and-vibration-isolation.md), a defense manufacturer, used the same answer first structure and named entity signals described above. It was published as third party journalism, not brand copy.

Founders who want to see the mechanics up close can review [**the Get Featured program**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/get-featured.md). It explains [**how the founder interview and publication process works**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/how-to-get-featured-on-spotlight-on-startups.md), from first conversation to published feature.

## Building an Earned, Paid, and Owned Mix as a Founder

Start with owned media. It gives an AI system somewhere to confirm a fact once earned coverage has already introduced the company. Keep the website specific: named capabilities, named locations, named leadership, not generic claims.

Layer in earned media next. Prioritize outlets that will publish independent, byline driven coverage rather than accept a paid placement dressed up as an article. [**Brandpoint’s research on content strategy**](https://www.brandpoint.com/blog/earned-owned-paid-media/) makes the same point: owned content fuels the story, but earned coverage is what makes it spread with credibility attached.

Use paid media last, only to amplify a message earned and owned media have already validated. Spending on ads before a company has any earned coverage does very little for AI citation, whatever it does for short term traffic.

For Orange County founders specifically, the fastest, free entry point into the earned category is [**a founder spotlight interview**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/get-featured.md). It produces a structured, AEO built asset without a press relationship or an advertising budget.

### How to Tell Which Category Is Actually Working

Website traffic and ad clicks measure paid and owned performance well. They say almost nothing about AI citation. The more useful signal is whether a company’s name, founder, and niche appear when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews a relevant buyer question.

Founders who run that test before and after publishing a structured earned media asset see the clearest evidence of which category is doing the work. Paid and owned channels rarely move that needle on their own.

## The Takeaway for Founders

Paid media still builds reach. Owned media still matters as the foundation an AI system checks once it already trusts a company. But earned media is the channel that actually gets a company named inside an AI answer. That gap is not closing. It is widening as more buyers move their research into AI tools first.

Founders who treat this as evergreen infrastructure, not a one time campaign, are the ones who show up when a buyer asks an AI assistant who the trusted option is in their category. [**That shift from traditional SEO thinking to structured authority**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/spotlight-on-startups-news-authority-is-the-new-seo.md) is already underway across Orange County’s B2B founder community. It rewards the companies that start building earned media assets before their category is already spoken for.

### Frequently Asked Questions

**What is the difference between earned, paid, and owned media?**Owned media is content a company fully controls, like its website. Paid media is content a company pays to distribute, like ads. Earned media is independent third party coverage, like journalism, that a company cannot buy or control.

**Why do AI answer engines cite earned media instead of a company’s own website?**AI systems cannot verify a brand’s claims about itself. They can treat independent, third party coverage as corroborated. [**Muck Rack’s research**](https://muckrack.com/blog/what-is-ai-reading-may-2026) found earned media accounts for 84 percent of AI citations, versus roughly 0.3 percent for paid content.

**Does paid advertising help a company get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?**Not meaningfully. Paid and advertorial content made up a small fraction of citations in the same research. Paid media can still build reach and awareness. It is simply not the channel AI systems draw from when selecting a source to name.

**Is a company website considered owned or earned media?**A company website is owned media. It is fully controlled by the company. That is exactly why AI systems treat it as unverified rather than corroborated, useful for confirming a fact but rarely the source that introduces a company in the first place.

**What makes an earned media placement citable by AI, rather than just published?**Structure. An earned placement needs answer first paragraphs, named entity signals, verifiable statistics, and schema markup such as Article and FAQPage. A well written feature without that structure is still harder for an AI system to extract and cite confidently.

**How does the PESO model relate to AI citation strategy?**The [**PESO model**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PESO_model) categorizes paid, earned, shared, and owned media. AI citation research maps almost directly onto it. AI systems overwhelmingly select from the earned category, use owned media to confirm facts, and treat paid media as functionally invisible for citation purposes.

**How can an Orange County founder start building earned media for AI citation?**The lowest friction starting point is a structured, journalist authored feature, such as [**a founder spotlight interview**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/get-featured.md). Build it with AEO structure from the start, not added afterward.
