The state of AI in America 2026 comes down to three facts. Americans use AI more every month, they trust it less every year, and they disagree sharply about who should control it.

This report from [**Spotlight on Startups**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/about/?output_format=md), the Earned Media Platform for B2B Founders, is current to 3 November 2026, which is Election Day. [**Pew Research Center found that 49 percent of US adults use AI chatbots**](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2026/06/17/americans-and-ai-2026-chatbots-smart-devices-and-views-on-impact/). Yet [**52 percent say they are more concerned than excited**](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/08/18/young-adults-in-the-us-are-increasingly-wary-of-ai-concerned-it-will-take-jobs/).

This is an opinion piece built on reported data. I run a media platform whose parent company, Kell Web Solutions, sells answer engine optimization services, so I have a stake in this story. I flag it where it matters.

### State of AI in America 2026: The Short Answer

![State of AI in America 2026](https://spotlightonstartups.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/State-of-AI-in-America-2026.jpg "State of AI in America 2026")

AI went from novelty to daily utility in under four years. It has not yet gone from utility to trust. Here is the scorecard as of November 2026.

- Personal use: [**24 percent of US adults use AI chatbots every day**](https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2026/06/17/americans-and-ai-2026-chatbots-smart-devices-and-views-on-impact/), and 60 percent read AI summaries in search results.
- Business use: Census Bureau readings put [**roughly one in five US employer firms using AI**](https://news.mozgii.com/census-bureau-ai-survey-us-business-ai-use), with larger firms and the information and finance sectors leading.
- Jobs: Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted [**120,136 announced job cuts citing AI through September**](https://fortune.com/2026/11/03/ai-layoffs-young-workers-hiring-data-centers-grid-water-midterms), but the sharper effect is a hiring freeze for young workers.
- Fear: [**79 percent of Americans expect AI to reduce US jobs**](https://news.gallup.com/poll/712751/americans-cool-toward.aspx), according to Gallup.
- Money: [**AI took 82.7 percent of US venture deal value**](https://startupfortune.com/ai-startups-now-take-827-of-us-venture-capital-dollars/) through the third quarter, the highest share PitchBook has recorded.
- Infrastructure: [**seven in ten Americans oppose an AI data center in their area**](https://fortune.com/2026/05/19/data-centers-electricity-costs-us-public-opinion/).

My opinion in one sentence: AI is real, the backlash is rational, and the argument that matters is no longer whether AI works. It is who pays for it and who profits from it.

### AI Adoption in the United States: Personal Use Has Gone Mainstream

#### Americans Use AI Chatbots Every Day

Consumer AI adoption in the United States crossed the halfway line in 2026. Pew surveyed 5,119 adults from 17 to 23 February 2026. It found that 49 percent use AI chatbots, up from 33 percent in 2024.

Daily use is the number that surprised me. Pew reports that 24 percent of adults use a chatbot every day. Another 60 percent say they read the AI summaries at the top of search results.

Work and emotional use are growing too. Pew’s survey, [**as summarized by Forbes**](https://www.forbes.com/sites/anishasircar/2026/06/22/americans-use-ai-more-but-trust-it-less-research-finds/), found that 38 percent of employed adults use chatbots for work tasks. Roughly one in ten Americans uses them for emotional support. That figure climbs to one in five among adults under 30.

#### ChatGPT Scale and the Competitive Field

OpenAI says [**ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week**](https://aimagazine.com/news/openais-billion-users-us-852bn-valuation-and-stargate), up from 900 million in February 2026. Pew’s figures show the US split. About 44 percent of American adults have used ChatGPT, against 24 percent for Gemini and 6 percent for Claude.

Those numbers describe reach, not loyalty. Most users spread across several tools. The market is concentrated at the top and still fluid underneath.

### Business AI Adoption in the US: Wide Use, Uneven Results

#### What Census Data Say About Companies Using AI

The Census Bureau tracks business AI use every two weeks in its Business Trends and Outlook Survey. Readings between December 2025 and May 2026 [**hovered between 17 and 20 percent of employer firms**](https://news.mozgii.com/census-bureau-ai-survey-us-business-ai-use). A later reading put it at [**24.6 percent for the two weeks ending 4 October**](https://idealink.tech/blog/ai-adoption-statistics).

Size matters. In the period ending 3 May, 37 percent of firms with 250 or more employees reported using AI. The information sector stood at 39.7 percent and finance and insurance at 33.9 percent.

A Federal Reserve note from April 2026 offers the worker view. It put [**work-related generative AI use among individuals near 41 percent**](https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/monitoring-ai-adoption-in-the-u-s-economy-20260403.html). Workers adopt faster than their employers do.

#### Why Business AI Adoption Surveys Disagree

Owner surveys paint a rosier picture than the Census does. Trade-group polls compiled by [**one small business roundup**](https://megawebvision.com/insights/ai-adoption-statistics-small-business) show two thirds to more than four fifths of owners saying they use AI. The Census asks a harder question. Did the firm use AI in a business function during the last two weeks?

The gap between those answers is the real story. Casual use of a chatbot is not the same as embedding AI in operations. Most companies are still in the first group.

#### The Slowest Industries Show the Gap

Construction makes the point. A [**Bluebeam survey of 750 US industry decision makers**](https://www.constructionbriefing.com/news/ai-adoption-remains-sluggish-among-us-construction-companies/8135420.article), published 2 November 2026, found 28 percent of architecture, engineering and construction firms using AI operationally. Only 7 percent had embedded it across core workflows.

Firms that did commit reported results. Among those running AI in production, 40 percent saw cost savings above $500,000. A lack of internal skills was the second-biggest barrier, cited by 34 percent.

Remote, an HR software vendor, adds a clue about direction. Its survey of 3,250 leaders found that [**93 percent of US organizations built their own AI tools or workflows**](https://manilatimes.net/2026/11/03/tmt-newswire/pr-newswire/91-of-companies-are-building-their-own-ai-tools-but-fewer-than-half-have-a-deliberate-strategy/2460183) in the past year. Only 52 percent called that a deliberate strategy. That is a vendor survey, so treat it as a signal and not a census.

### AI and Jobs in America: Hiring Freezes Matter More Than Layoffs

#### What the AI Layoff Numbers Show

AI-attributed layoffs are rising from a small base. Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted [**48,414 AI-cited cuts through October 2025**](https://www.challengergray.com/blog/october-challenger-report-153074-job-cuts-on-cost-cutting-ai/). Through September 2026 the count reached 120,136, according to [**Fortune’s reading of the Challenger data**](https://fortune.com/2026/11/03/ai-layoffs-young-workers-hiring-data-centers-grid-water-midterms).

That is about 21 percent of the 573,195 cuts announced this year. Tech firms announced 165,925 cuts, up 54 percent. Total announced cuts are actually down 39 percent from the first nine months of 2025.

The headline cases are real. [**Intuit cut 17 percent of its staff, about 3,000 people**](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ai-layoffs-hiring-entry-level-workers/), and said it was shifting focus to AI. Meta began laying off 8,000 workers in the same period.

#### The Entry-Level Squeeze

The sharper damage shows up in hiring. Stanford economists updated their “canaries in the coal mine” study in August 2026. They found that [**employment among 22 to 25 year olds in the most AI-exposed jobs runs about 19 percent below**](https://aiweekly.co/node/10903) peers in less-exposed fields, using ADP payroll data.

The [**Harvard Gazette reported**](https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2026/09/why-ai-hasnt-triggered-mass-layoffs-yet/) in September that entry-level postings have fallen by as much as 73 percent in four years by some counts. Unemployment still sits near 4.1 percent, held up by healthcare hiring.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned in 2025 that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years. Nothing in the 2026 data proves him right. Nothing proves him wrong either.

#### Why Economists Still Disagree About AI and Jobs

Some of what gets blamed on AI may be something else. A Harvard Business Review survey of 1,006 executives found that [**AI-linked layoffs come almost entirely from anticipation**](https://hbr.org/2026/01/companies-are-laying-off-workers-because-of-ais-potential-not-its-performance) of what AI might do, not from proven performance. Critics call the practice AI-washing.

The Gazette adds a counterweight. Accenture found that 52 percent of top executives expect AI to increase entry-level hiring, not cut it. And one survey reported that [**nearly one in five workers laid off because of AI were asked to return**](https://peoplematters.in/news/business/nearly-1-in-5-workers-laid-off-due-to-ai-are-asked-to-return-survey-finds-53098).

BCG projects the larger shift. It estimates that [**50 to 55 percent of US jobs will be reshaped by AI**](https://www.bcg.com/publications/2026/ai-will-reshape-more-jobs-than-it-replaces) over the next two to three years. Reshaped is not the same as eliminated. My read: the job market is being rewritten faster than it is being emptied.

### Which US Industries Will AI Change First?

#### Technology, Media and Software

Technology feels it first. The 165,925 tech cuts and the 22 to 25 year old software gap point the same way. Media feels it next. News executives surveyed by the Reuters Institute [**expect search referrals to fall 43 percent**](https://searchengineland.com/news-publishers-search-referrals-drop-report-467408) within three years.

Chartbeat data reported by Press Gazette showed [**Google search traffic to publishers fell 33 percent worldwide**](https://www.pixelmojo.io/blogs/google-traffic-dropped-33-percent-ai-search-shift) in the year to November 2025, and 38 percent in the United States. Advertising faces a trust problem too. A Bentley-Gallup study found most Americans view business use of AI in advertising negatively.

#### Finance, Healthcare and Construction

Finance and information services lead business adoption, as the Census figures above show. Healthcare is a different story. It is the sector propping up US hiring, and [**one in four Americans now use AI for health information**](https://www.gallup.com/topic/artificial-intelligence.aspx), according to Gallup.

Construction and skilled trades sit near the other end. The Bluebeam data show how slowly operational adoption is moving there. That gap is an opening for founders who build AI tools for unglamorous industries.

### AI Extinction Risk: What Experts Actually Say About Human Extinction

#### The Warnings From Inside the Industry

The fear of AI-driven human extinction moved from the fringe to the front page in 2026. Geoffrey Hinton told BBC Newsnight in September that he puts the odds of AI wiping out humanity within ten years at [**about 10 percent**](https://www.futura-sciences.com/en/10-is-not-unreasonable-an-ai-pioneer-warns-of-extinction-risk_39612/). He called it a personal guess made under total scientific uncertainty.

Evan Hubinger, who leads alignment science at Anthropic, said he puts catastrophic risk above 10 percent. The same coverage notes that an Anthropic report in August found current models pose minimal catastrophic risk. The fear concerns future systems, not today’s.

A [**departing Anthropic researcher’s warning that AI could kill all humans**](https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/ai-risks-humanity-warnings-9.7341913) by the end of the decade set off public outcry. The Machine Intelligence Research Institute, which argues superintelligence would likely end humanity, has pushed the case in [**interviews with NBC News**](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/ai-doomers-human-extinction-rcna597950).

#### The Skeptics and the Near-Term Harms

Skeptics push back on the evidence. A researcher with nearly 40 years of AI experience wrote in The Conversation on 27 October that the jump from [**identified risks to likely annihilation lacks evidence**](https://theconversation.com/ai-poses-three-big-types-of-risk-heres-how-worried-we-should-be-about-them-293848). Gary Marcus doubts extinction but argues that real threats go unaddressed.

Near-term harms are measurable. The IMF reported on 13 October that [**more than 70 percent of tracked vulnerabilities exploited in 2026**](https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/10/13/ai-bubble-could-burst-and-take-global-economy-with-it-imf-warns/5302781) were already being abused on or before the day they were disclosed. Fraud, privacy loss and misinformation are also documented today.

#### My View on AI Extinction Fears

Extinction probabilities are opinions, not measurements. A [**2023 statement signed by hundreds of AI leaders**](https://www.fortune.com/2023/05/30/sam-altman-ai-risk-of-extinction-pandemics-nuclear-warfare) put extinction risk alongside pandemics and nuclear war. I take that seriously. I also notice that many of the loudest warnings come from people who build or study the most advanced systems. That makes them informed, and it also makes them invested.

Both things can be true. Serious people fear the worst case, and serious people see no evidence for it. The sensible response is to fund safety research and rules for frontier models without letting the debate crowd out harms already on the table.

### Big AI Power: Concentration, Lobbying and the Fight Over AI Regulation

#### How Much Capital the Largest AI Companies Control

Concentration is the second big fear, and the numbers support it. Crunchbase counts [**$159 billion in global venture funding in the third quarter**](https://news.crunchbase.com/venture/q3-2026-global-startup-funding-ai-billion-dollar-rounds-exits-data/). A record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more, and they took about a third of the dollars.

OpenAI closed a $122 billion round at an $852 billion post-money valuation in March, according to [**AI Magazine’s account**](https://aimagazine.com/news/openais-billion-users-us-852bn-valuation-and-stargate). The Financial Times reported annualized revenue near $50 billion. OpenAI confidentially filed for an IPO in June, [**CNBC reported**](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/27/jim-cramer-warns-ai-circular-financing-echoes-dot-com-bubble.html).

Startups outside AI feel the squeeze. [**PitchBook data show a median Series A valuation of $42.4 million**](https://startupfortune.com/ai-startups-now-take-827-of-us-venture-capital-dollars/) for non-AI startups against $78 million for AI rivals. Money follows the narrative.

#### AI Super PACs and Political Power

The industry now spends real money on politics. Axios reported on 3 November that [**Public First and Leading the Future spent more than $50 million**](https://axios.com/2026/11/03/ai-election-politics-2026-midterms) through affiliated super PACs in nearly 50 races. Their ads mostly avoided the subject of AI.

The two networks represent opposing camps. Leading the Future is backed by OpenAI’s Greg Brockman and his wife Anna, plus Andreessen and Horowitz. Public First received a $20 million gift from Anthropic that a spokesperson says is [**restricted to public education on AI policy**](https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2026/1020/anthropic-openai-political-spending-midterms).

Other trackers report far larger totals depending on what they count. I am not choosing among them. The Intercept found that both networks [**throttled back general-election spending**](https://theintercept.com/2026/10/29/midterms-election-money-ai-super-pac/) as public anger over data centers and jobs grew.

#### Federal Versus State AI Regulation

The regulatory fight is unresolved. A White House executive order created an AI Litigation Task Force to challenge state laws. The White House followed on 20 March 2026 with a framework urging Congress to [**replace the state patchwork with one national standard**](https://www.ropesgray.com/en/insights/alerts/2026/03/examining-the-landscape-and-limitations-of-the-federal-push-to-override-state-ai-regulation).

Congress has not complied. The Senate voted [**99 to 1 to strip a 10-year freeze on state AI laws**](https://www.softwareimprovementgroup.com/blog/us-ai-legislation-overview/) from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. A bipartisan preemption draft has [**stalled since June**](https://casrai.org/news/federal-ai-moratorium-state-preemption-fight-2026).

On 23 September, [**26 state attorneys general urged Congress**](https://www.regulatoryoversight.com/2026/10/26-state-ags-urge-congress-to-regulate-frontier-ai-and-preserve-state-authority/) to regulate frontier AI without wiping out state authority. Supporters of preemption say fifty rulebooks choke startups. Opponents say states move faster than Washington on real harms. Both arguments hold weight.

### AI Billionaires, Hyperscaler Spending and the AI Bubble Debate

#### Where AI Wealth Sits

Wealth envy is easy to dismiss and hard to ignore. [**Nvidia became the first company ever valued at $5.5 trillion**](https://www.forbes.com/sites/antoniopequenoiv/2026/05/13/nvidia-hits-record-55-trillion-value-first-company-to-ever-reach-mark/) in May 2026. Its fiscal fourth-quarter sales were $68 billion, up 73 percent, and data centers supplied 91 percent of that.

CEO Jensen Huang holds a stake that [**WealthRank valued near $182 billion**](https://www.wealthrank.in/company/nvidia) on 1 November. Most Americans do not own that kind of upside. They do own index funds, and those funds now lean heavily on a handful of AI names.

#### Hyperscaler Capex and the Cash Flow Question

The four largest hyperscalers are spending at historic scale. Estimates of their combined 2026 capital spending [**run from about $700 billion to $745 billion**](https://www.tmtfinance.com/intel/2026-hyperscaler-capex-tops-us700bn-analysis), depending on method.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management estimates that [**AI capex grew from 33 percent of hyperscaler operating cash flow in 2023 to 93 percent in 2026**](https://am.jpmorgan.com/dk/en/asset-management/institutional/insights/market-insights/investment-outlook/technology-and-ai/). UBS expects Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft to [**spend about 102 percent of their cloud revenue**](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/ai-absurd-spending-boom-hyperscalers-162709082.html) on capex this year.

#### Is the AI Bubble About to Burst?

Regulators are nervous. The IMF’s October 13 Global Financial Stability Report warned that [**markets are exposed to an AI-driven correction**](https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/10/13/ai-bubble-could-burst-and-take-global-economy-with-it-imf-warns/5302781). It flagged circular financing, where AI firms act as one another’s investors, lenders and customers. The Open Markets Institute [**called the bubble primed to pop**](https://asiatimes.com/2026/10/report-says-circular-financing-shows-ai-bubble-primed-to-pop/).

The bulls have numbers too. Anthropic’s S-1 shows [**first-half 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion**](https://fortune.com/2026/10/27/anthropic-ipo-s-1-investors-81-billion-loss/), up 13 times year over year. It also shows an $80.7 billion GAAP net loss, mostly non-cash fair-value changes, and $1.6 billion of adjusted operating income.

Economists disagree on AI’s contribution to growth. Goldman Sachs calculated that AI investment added [**basically zero to 2025 growth**](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2026/02/23/ai-economic-growth-gdp-mirage/). Other estimates [**range from 0.1 to 0.8 percentage points**](https://nai500.com/blog/2026/10/artificial-intelligence-is-driving-us-economic-expansion-but-institutions-disagree-on-its-contribution/) for 2026. Deloitte says tech investment has driven [**about a quarter of real GDP growth since 2023**](https://www.deloitte.com/global/en/insights/topics/economy/spotlight/tech-investment-boom.html).

My view: the technology is real and the financing is fragile. Both statements can be true at once, as they were in 1999.

### AI Data Centers: Economic Value, Electricity Bills and Local Backlash

#### The Case for AI Data Centers

Data centers are the physical layer of the AI economy, and the money is large. One analysis cited in a macro roundup estimates [**AI investment near $600 billion in 2026**](https://www.edwardconard.com/macro-roundup/what-is-ai-investment-crowding-out/), almost 2 percent of GDP and over 10 percent of business fixed investment. Construction crews, electricians and local tax bases benefit.

Developers also promise energy. Google plans to back 1.4 gigawatts of wind, 200 megawatts of solar and 300 megawatts of battery storage beside its proposed 780-megawatt data center in Pine Island, Minnesota. Residents are not sold. An August survey there found [**75.8 percent of participants opposed**](https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Massive-AI-Data-Center-Sparks-Backlash-Despite-Clean-Energy-Promises.html) the project.

#### Why Americans Fear AI Data Centers

Fear centers on the power bill. Gallup polling released this spring found that [**seven in ten Americans oppose an AI data center nearby**](https://fortune.com/2026/05/19/data-centers-electricity-costs-us-public-opinion/), including 48 percent strongly. Research cited by Fortune suggests wholesale electricity could run 6 to 29 percent higher nationally by 2030, and up to 57 percent higher for generation costs in Virginia.

PJM’s market monitor attributed 63 percent of the 2025/2026 capacity price increase, about $9.3 billion, to data centers, [**according to Fortune’s summary**](https://fortune.com/2026/11/03/ai-layoffs-young-workers-hiring-data-centers-grid-water-midterms) of IEEFA analysis. Texas tells a different story. [**CNBC noted that ERCOT prices have stayed relatively stable**](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/13/ai-data-centers-electricity-prices-backlash-ratepayer-protection.html) since 2022 despite hyperscaler growth.

#### The Data Center Backlash Becomes Policy

Opposition is now measurable. Data Center Watch counted [**at least 120 projects worth almost $200 billion blocked or delayed**](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-10-10/how-data-centers-are-driving-up-us-electricity-prices) in the first half of 2026. Organized groups now exist in [**roughly 40 states**](https://www.newsweek.com/map-shows-electricity-costs-in-every-state-as-ai-data-centers-surge-prices-12279072).

Lawmakers are responding. [**New Jersey’s Data Center Fair Share Act**](https://fortune.com/2026/11/03/ai-layoffs-young-workers-hiring-data-centers-grid-water-midterms), passed in July, creates a separate rate class and requires financial guarantees for at least 85 percent of requested load for ten years. Virginia began taxing data center electricity at 1.1 cents per kilowatt-hour. A federal AI Data Center Moratorium Act was [**introduced in late March**](https://thenationaldesk.com/news/fact-check-team/ai-data-centers-spark-local-backlash-across-the-us-artificial-intelligence-electricity-utilities-noise-land-use-tax-incentives).

My view: the fix is simple in principle. Large loads should pay for the grid they require. Companies have already [**promised to absorb more of their electricity costs**](https://qz.com/ai-data-center-backlash-electricity-costs-public-opinion-051926), and binding contracts will matter more than pledges.

### Why Americans Use AI More and Trust It Less

#### Public Opinion on AI in 2026

The gap between use and trust is the defining feature of public opinion. Pew’s June survey found that 52 percent of adults are more concerned than excited about AI, 37 percent are evenly split, and only 9 percent are more excited. Concern was 37 percent in 2021.

Young adults moved most. For the first time, 55 percent of adults under 30 are more concerned than excited. In Pew’s February survey, 63 percent said AI is advancing too quickly.

Gallup’s Bentley survey shows the same drift. The share saying AI does more harm than good rose to 39 percent from 31 percent in 2025. Americans still rate AI as worse than people at every task Gallup asked about.

#### Politics and AI Anxiety

AI anxiety has crossed party lines. Pew’s analysis found that [**56 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans**](https://aiweekly.co/alerts/pew-democrats-overtake-gop-as-top-ai-worriers-56-to-49) are more concerned than excited. The partisan order flipped from 2023.

Voters head to the polls today with AI now a campaign subject, [**Axios reports**](https://axios.com/2026/11/03/ai-election-politics-2026-midterms). I will not tell anyone how to vote. I will say that candidates now talk about electricity bills, entry-level jobs and who regulates AI.

### What AI Means for B2B Founders: Getting Found in AI Answers

#### How B2B Buyers Use AI Search

For founders, the practical question is simple. Will a buyer’s AI assistant recommend your company? G2, which runs a B2B software review marketplace, surveyed 1,076 B2B decision makers in March 2026. It found that [**51 percent start software research with an AI chatbot more often than Google**](https://learn.g2.com/g2-2026-ai-search-insight-report).

G2 also reported that 69 percent said a chatbot led them to a vendor other than the one they planned to buy. That is a vendor survey, but it matches what founders tell me. The shortlist now forms inside an AI conversation.

#### Known Is Not the Same as Recommended

Spotlight on Startups tested this directly. Our [**2026 B2B AI Citation Benchmark**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/2026-b2b-ai-citation-benchmark/?output_format=md) asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to recommend B2B vendors 54 times across six industries. None of the 30 small and mid-sized companies we tested was named, not once.

The engines knew those companies. When we asked about them by name, the engines cited them in 97.5 percent of observations. Perplexity named 133 distinct companies in 18 discovery runs, and none was in our sample. The benchmark also says plainly that we cannot yet tell founders what fixes the gap.

#### Earned Media and Answer Engine Optimization

Here is the stake I disclosed at the top. Spotlight on Startups is a d/b/a of Kell Web Solutions, Inc., which sells answer engine optimization services. Our [**editorial standards**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/editorial-standards/?output_format=md) separate the newsroom from the commercial side.

My argument is that third-party coverage matters more as AI answers replace link lists. We explore it in [**why citations replaced clips in 2026**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/the-future-of-pr-in-the-age-of-ai-why-citations-replaced-clips-in-2026/?output_format=md) and in our guide to [**how SEO, AEO and GEO work together**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/ai-search-optimization-guide-2027-how-seo-aeo-and-geo-work-together/?output_format=md). The page [**Earned vs Paid vs Owned Media**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/journalist/?output_format=md) explains the difference.

Founders should check any publication before paying for coverage. Our [**nine-question legitimacy checklist**](https://spotlightonstartups.com/how-to-evaluate-a-founder-publication-a-nine-question-legitimacy-checklist/?output_format=md) is a starting point. ### AI Outlook 2027: What to Watch Next

#### Five Signals That Will Shape AI in America

My five signals for 2027 are below. Each has a number or an event attached.

- IPOs: OpenAI confidentially filed in June and Anthropic has filed an S-1. Public markets will price the financing questions.
- Capex: [**UBS projects hyperscaler spending of about $1.4 trillion in 2027**](https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/ai-absurd-spending-boom-hyperscalers-162709082.html), up from roughly $1 trillion in 2026. Cash flow has to follow.
- Regulation: The preemption fight resumes after the midterms, and state attorneys general have said they will keep enforcing their own laws.
- Power: Rate cases and data center tariffs, like New Jersey’s, will decide whether the backlash cools or hardens.
- Hiring: Watch whether entry-level postings recover. The Stanford gap of 19 percent is the number to track.

#### My Outlook for AI in America

I expect the buildout to continue and the politics to get harder. Opposition will slow some projects but, as [**Newsweek’s analysis concluded**](https://www.newsweek.com/map-shows-electricity-costs-in-every-state-as-ai-data-centers-surge-prices-12279072), probably will not stop the national buildout. I expect the financing to wobble before the technology does.

For founders, the lesson is practical. Build for the buyer who asks an AI before asking you. Earn independent coverage that machines can cite. And plan for a public that uses your tools while doubting your industry.

### AI in America FAQ

#### How many Americans use AI in 2026?

About half of American adults use AI chatbots. Pew Research Center found 49 percent in February 2026, up from 33 percent in 2024. Pew also found that 24 percent use a chatbot daily and 60 percent read AI summaries in search results.

That makes AI a mainstream consumer technology, though trust is lower than usage.

#### Will AI take American jobs?

AI is cutting hiring faster than it is cutting existing jobs. Challenger counted 120,136 AI-cited layoffs through September 2026, and entry-level employment in exposed jobs runs about 19 percent below peers. Economists say much of the attribution may be AI-washing, and unemployment remains near 4.1 percent.

BCG expects half or more of US jobs to be reshaped within three years.

#### Is AI going to cause human extinction?

Nobody knows, and the estimates are personal opinions. Geoffrey Hinton has put the ten-year risk near 10 percent, while other researchers say the evidence for extinction is missing. Anthropic reported in August that current models pose minimal catastrophic risk. The concern is about future systems.

Measurable harms today include fraud, cyberattacks and misinformation.

#### Do a few big AI companies have too much power?

The evidence of concentration is strong. AI took 82.7 percent of US venture deal value through the third quarter, and 27 companies raised about a third of global venture dollars in Q3. Two super PAC networks spent more than $50 million in nearly 50 races.

Whether that is too much power is a policy judgment, and Congress has not settled it.

#### Are AI companies in a bubble?

Regulators see bubble risk, but nobody can prove it. The IMF warned on 13 October that markets are exposed to an AI-driven correction and flagged circular financing. Against that, Anthropic reported $16.3 billion of first-half revenue and Nvidia reported 73 percent sales growth.

The technology is real, and the financing is the weak point.

#### Are AI data centers raising my electric bill?

In some regions, yes. PJM’s market monitor attributed 63 percent of the 2025/2026 capacity price increase to data centers. Texas’s ERCOT grid has seen stable prices since 2022. The effect depends on how a region structures its capacity market and who pays for grid upgrades.

New Jersey and Virginia have adopted rules to shift costs onto large users.

#### How can a B2B startup get recommended by AI assistants?

Nobody can promise a recommendation. Our 2026 benchmark found that none of 30 small B2B firms was named in 54 discovery runs, although engines cited them 97.5 percent of the time when asked by name. Independent, journalist-reported coverage gives engines something to cite.

The entity-ambiguity problem, such as Nifty being read as a stock index, is the one clearly fixable issue.
