Disclosure first, because it changes how you should read everything below. I run Spotlight on Startups, the Answer Engine Optimization Earned Media Platform, and I pay for three of the AI visibility tools discussed here. I do not sell one and hold no affiliate arrangements with any of them. That is a real conflict. It is also a smaller one than the conflict in almost every other article on this subject, and the reason why is the finding this piece is built on.
AI visibility tools for B2B companies are software platforms that run a fixed set of buyer questions against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode on a schedule, then record whether your company was named, whether it was cited with a live link, and which competitors appeared instead. As of September 2026 there are more than forty such platforms. I reviewed thirteen published comparisons of them while researching this article, and every single one was published by a company selling a competing tool or AEO services.
Almost every review of AI visibility tools is written by a competing vendor
This is the single most useful thing to know before you read any comparison of AI visibility tools, including this one.
Airefs published a review of Peec AI concluding Airefs offers better value. WorkDuo reviewed both Peec AI and Profound and recommends WorkDuo. Scalenut’s Peec AI review recommends Scalenut. AI Peekaboo’s recommends AI Peekaboo. Trakkr’s Profound review recommends Trakkr. Arvow’s recommends Arvow. Indexly’s recommends Indexly. Discovered Labs, AEO Labs, OrganiKPI and MaxAEO each close by offering their own AEO services.
Thirteen of thirteen. None of it is hidden or fraudulent. But it means that when a founder asks an AI assistant which AI visibility tool to buy, the sources feeding that answer were written almost entirely by people selling one.
There is a measurable second consequence. The published prices do not agree. For Profound alone I found a $99 Starter tier, a $399 Growth tier, a $499 Lite tier, a $2,000+ Enterprise tier, and one source describing it as sales-led with no published price at all. For Peec AI I found $95, €70, €82, €85 and $80 all quoted as the entry price. Some of that is annual versus monthly billing and currency. Some is articles published months ago and never updated. No specific prices appear below for that reason.
What AI visibility tools actually do
Nearly all AI visibility tools do the same core job: run a prompt list against several AI engines on a schedule and log four things. Whether your brand was mentioned. Whether it was cited with a link. Which exact URL was cited. Which other domains appeared in the same answer.
That is genuinely useful and tedious to do by hand. For most of these products it is also the entire offering.
What almost no AI visibility tool does is tell you why you were not cited, or what would change it. Several advertise recommendation engines that generate article ideas from your tracked prompts. Running two of these side by side on SpotlightOnStartups.com through August and September 2026, those engines were the weakest component of both products. Editing the account description changed the recommendations. That is a mirror, not a sensor.
The four categories of AI visibility tool
Enterprise trackers. Profound is the funded leader, having raised a Series C in early 2026 at a reported $1 billion valuation. It offers broad engine coverage, dashboards built for reporting to stakeholders, and a conversation-level view of how topics are discussed across AI platforms. Built for organizations with a dedicated brand or SEO function and a procurement process. Multiple reviewers flag the same trade-off: real depth, and an entry cost that is a meaningful commitment for a lean team.
Self-serve trackers. Peec AI launched in early 2025 and is the most frequently named alternative, tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot. Reviewers consistently praise the interface and consistently flag the same constraint: standard plans cap how many models you track at once, and prompt limits shape what you can monitor.
Budget trackers with crawler data. Airefs sits at the low end and adds two capabilities the others generally lack: Reddit and community monitoring, and AI crawler analytics.
That second one deserves attention. Crawler analytics show which AI bots fetched which pages on your site and how often. In the seven days to 6 September 2026, Airefs recorded 1,335 ChatGPT crawler impressions, 923 from Apple Intelligence and 93 from Claude across SpotlightOnStartups.com. Not whether we were cited. Whether we were read. Those are different questions and the second one comes first, because if a crawler has never fetched a page, no amount of prompt tracking explains why it is not cited. Most AI visibility tools do not report this at all.
Bundled SEO platform modules. Several established SEO platforms have added AI visibility modules. If you already pay for one, check what is included before buying a specialist tool. The tracking may be shallower and still sufficient.
What no AI visibility tool does
They do not earn citations. Every tool in this category measures. None changes the outcome. The gap between knowing your citation rate and improving it is where all the actual work sits.
They disagree with each other. Running two trackers against SpotlightOnStartups.com in September 2026 produced different numbers from both. Different prompt sets, different sampling frequency, different definitions of a mention versus a citation. Neither is wrong; they measure slightly different things. If you switch tools, treat it as a new baseline rather than a continuation.
Their content recommendations are weak, as covered above.
How to choose an AI visibility tool
Ask which question you need answered.
“Am I cited?” Any tracker answers this. Choose on price and engine coverage. The cheapest tool covering the engines your buyers actually use is the right answer.
“Is anything even reading my site?” You need crawler analytics, which is a much narrower field. Check for it specifically rather than assuming.
“What should I do about it?” No tool answers this well. Budget for the work, not just the dashboard.
“Can I report this to a client or a board?” Enterprise tools are built for this and it is a genuine differentiator.
One practical note: prompt limits, not price, are usually the binding constraint. Write your prompt list first, then price against it. Our AEO and earned media glossary defines the terms these platforms use if any of them are unfamiliar.
How Spotlight on Startups uses these tools
We run AI visibility tools on our own domain before recommending anything to anyone. Our 2026 B2B AI Citation Benchmark, published 25 August 2026, tested 30 small and mid-sized B2B companies across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity with 720 coded observations from 504 runs. Not one was named in a discovery answer. All were described accurately once the engine was given the company name. Our analysis alongside independent Gadex research examines why.
A tracker would have told each of those 30 companies the same thing: zero. Knowing that is the start of the work. Our editorial standards set out how we verify claims like these, and our AI Ask Panel lets you test questions against several engines at once.
Frequently asked questions
What are AI visibility tools?
AI visibility tools are software platforms that run a fixed list of buyer questions against AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on a schedule, then record whether your company is named, whether it is cited with a live link, and which competitors appear instead. They measure presence in AI answers rather than search rankings.
Do I need an AI visibility tool at all?
Not immediately. If you have never checked what AI says about your company, do it manually first. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode about your business and your category and write down what comes back. That costs nothing and usually reveals more than a first month of tracking. Buy a tool when you need those questions answered repeatedly and consistently.
Which AI visibility tool is best for a small B2B company?
There is no single best AI visibility tool. The meaningful differences are engine coverage, prompt limits, whether AI crawler analytics are included, and price. Feature lists converge quickly in a category this young. Choose on the specific question you need answered rather than on feature count.
Will an AI visibility tool improve my AI citations?
No. AI visibility tools measure; they do not change the outcome. Our 2026 benchmark found zero of 30 B2B companies named in AI discovery answers. A tracker would have reported that number accurately and changed nothing about it. Improving citation requires third-party coverage, entity clarity and content structured for extraction.
Why do published prices for AI visibility tools disagree?
Three reasons. Annual versus monthly billing and currency conversion. Articles published months ago and never updated. And the fact that most reviews are written by competitors with no incentive to present a rival’s pricing favourably. Check the vendor’s own pricing page on the day you buy.
What are AI crawler analytics and why do they matter?
AI crawler analytics report which AI bots fetched which pages on your website and how often. They answer whether AI systems are reading your site, which comes before whether they cite it. If ChatGPT’s crawler has never fetched a page, prompt tracking cannot explain why that page is not cited. Most AI visibility tools do not report crawler data.
Are there alternatives to buying an AI visibility tool?
Yes. Running your prompt list manually in a logged-out browser session and recording the results in a spreadsheet produces the same core data at no cost. It takes roughly two hours for 25 prompts across three engines. Tools are worth paying for when that becomes a monthly job rather than a one-off. If you would rather have someone else do the work, our how to get featured page explains how we cover B2B founders, and what a feature costs sets out what is and is not free.

Pricing figures are deliberately omitted because published sources conflict. Verify with each vendor directly.
Crawler impression figures and observations on recommendation-engine quality and cross-tool measurement differences come from running multiple AI visibility tools on SpotlightOnStartups.com during August and September 2026. They are one operator’s data, not a controlled test.
